Last Wednesday, I was scheduled to meet the guy who will be printing DDT CD cover. So, I tembo (sneakout/ranaway) from office early and went straight to Kitaro, Bukit Bintang at 12pm. As I reached the place I was Yus (Kuchalana) eating alone. So I sat with him and had a little chat before he leave to go back to work.

While talking to the printer guy (Dan Azreen) and the girl who came along with him, I found out the girl is actually Yazid's (Search) daughter and he himself is the son of Andy's (Flop Poppy/Spiral Kinetic Circus).

I went home that day singing to the song 'Flop Poppies' by Flop Poppy (that later being rerecorded by OAG with the title 'Knocked Silly'.

As usual I woke up late today to work. Been working on DDT cover design last night. Since I was still in bed till I'm on my bike to work, tonnes of SMS came into my cellphone inbox.

This one I got from Zeezam "Salam. Sy br dpt call dari Fadiah yg menyatakan Syukree (Chaos PS zine) telah meninggal dunia. Innalillah".


This is another one from an anonymous number "Bekas wartawan Suara Keadilan, yang juga menulis untuk watan dan malaysia today, Syukree Hussein meninggal dunia dalam tidur pagi ini di Brickfields. Jenazah kini di PPUM. Beliau dijangka dikebumi di Terengganu".

As I arrived at the office, Fael asked me to pick him up and planned to go to the hospital. Then again, Cyberia and the hospital is too far. Plus, Fael have job interview later today around here. So, we cancelled the plan to go to the hospital.

Just recently he came along with Dum Dum Tak when we played New Era College, Kajang…and went makan satay kajang together and I sent him to KL Central later that night.

Just recently petang raya haji, he came to Kuala Terengganu and we (Syukree, Fazri DRSA zine+wife+kid, and i) went to Sedang (Sleepyjeremy vocalist) wedding and lepak at Fazri and Shabri (Kasih Sayang) house for a cup of tea. I sent him off to Masjid Ladang later than evening.

Just a few days ago I watched his ‘demo separuh bogel’ video and laughed at how crazy this guy is.

Syukree might be a pain in the ass most of the time, but…really he inspired and did a kick-start to the Terengganu DIY (3rd generation?) scene back in 1997/98 with his ever-so-controversial fanzine, Chaos PS (PS stands for Pulau Serai his kampung). After his zine was released, we saw zines like DRSA, Narrator, Go Str8 Down and also Mosh arise…

Yeah, he’s a good-hearted guy. I still remember as we drive in Kuala Terengganu petang raya haji, he told me he just closed-down his long-running blog at hatiku dot blogspot dot com. He love the blog so much. He said it’s because hatiku has hurt a lot or peoples’ hearts.

Maybe it’s a ’sign’…? As if he knows he’ll be away for good…

This news is a shock to me…hope he rest well and in peace…

Seriously, aku memang tak pernah dengar lagu dari kugiran yang satu ni walaupun acap kali melihat namanya di mana ya. Bodysurf Music ada menjemput mereka untuk 'manggung' di Kl baru-baru ini tetapi mereka terpaksa cancel last minute atas hal apa tak pernah aku tahu. Petang semalam aku dapat misscall dan sms dari saudara chef Ujay bertanya samada aku akan pergi acara konsert free yang ada kugiran ni. Setelah tahu, ia adalah free dan di BB, kebetulan pula aku memang ada di KL, aku tidak berpikir dua kali untuk terus menjemba ke arah beliau.

Walaupun nama kugiran ni agak 'Plain White Tees', ternyata mereka sangat hebat! Vokalisnya punyai showmanship yang sangat power. Bawak ke mimpi di malam hari. Haha! Secara rambangnya, mereka boleh dikatakan sekapal dengan Mocca tapi lebih retro (semua pakai baju kolar beso dan spek itam) dan semua lagu berbahasa melayu.

Mereka ada membawakan lagu satu lagu lama yang dikatakan Ujay, antara lagu kegemarannya. Aizat Tarmizi pula mengatakan itu merupakan cover dari P. Ramlee. Aku takde kepastian, tapi yang pasti aku pernah mendengarnya sebelum ini. Bukan versi P. Ramlee mahupun WSATCC, tetapi rakaman versi cover oleh Cyclown Circus (kumpulan badut sarkis bermain music gipsy mengelilingi seluruh dunia dengan menunggang basikal asal Amerika Syarikat). Mereka merakam lagu itu ketika berada di Indonesia jika tidak silap saya.

Oh, The SIGITS menutup acara malam semalam...sangat rock. Deep Purple...layan tengok live memang bes! Ramai jugak rakan-rakan yang berada di kawasan kejadian semalam.

Tak sia-sia berasak-asak dalam peluh masam pengunjung konsert semalam untuk menonton WSATCC. XD

Maybe some of you xfresh FM listeners are familiar with the band Robot Asmara, and also used to follow punk rock scene. For those who are still clueless, Robot Asmara consists of punk rockers line-ups;

Aku dapat kaset ni pada tahun 99 dengan membeli gaya pos dari frontman band ni, David kalau tak silap aku. Aku tak tau ape aktiviti line-up band ni sekarang kecuali Cem yang aktif dengan Food Not Bombs dan masih boleh dijumpai di CM atau gig-gig di sekitar KL. 6 lagu-laguan skapunk dari band Ipoh-mali ni. 2 lagu dari kaset ini juga dirakam kembali dan dimuatkan dalam kompilasi Kopi Sechewen vol. 1 oleh Trademuck Entertainment (Sekarang Bodysurf Music).

sekolah lama 1-DEP

Gambar cover kaset kat atas ni merupakan antara DIY release dari local band yang pertama aku dapat dalam hidup aku. Masa dapat tu (May 1997) memang aku suka gila la band ni, sampai sekarang pun memang aku suka band ni. DEP merupakan band asal Kuantan dengan line-up yang agak aktif di sana pada masa tu (ada jam studio dan record label dengan nama yang sama). Kaset ni ada memuatkan lagu top dari mereka 'I who have nothing too'. Aku dapat kaset ni dari kakak sulung aku yang belajar di MPIK Cheras time tu sekali dengan Izzat dari Enslaved Chaos. Aku rasa dia dapat kaset ni dari Izzat. Aku baru je dapat bersemuka dengan frontman band ni Acai tahun lepas setelah dengar suara dia dari kaset ni sejak 97. Band ni aktif balik main show sejak malam tahun baru 2008 dan ade keluarkan CD koleksi.

The end of Bau Bau Cafe

Last malam raya haji, I got the news that Bau Bau Cafe at Central Market Annexe is closing. Their contract with CM Annexe has ended and they'll be closed one and for all. That means we're losing another great hang-out spot that saw a lot of free gigs (acoustic and also full set shows) at the Anjung Bising. Probably we'll still have shows there since Ricecooker Shop is still there.

Balik Kampung Raya Haji

Sejak kerja ni, jarang betul boleh balik kampung. Dah cuti sem pun, tenaga pengajar (atau tenaga penjahanam hahahha) kena pergi jugak kolej. Raya haji aku bertekad macam mane pun kena balik kampung jugak sebab mak aku dah bising suruh buat pasport cepat.

Semalam aku berpeluang bertemu geng-geng di kampung ni. Dengan kata lain budak-budak scene di kampung la sebab sejak sampai malam Khamis tu aku keluar rumah lepak ngn kwn 2 kali je dengan Aniq (Masked Reader zine) dan Kalik (kawan aku sekelas dari darjah 4 di KL sampai tingkatan 3 di Terengganu, ajaib).

Masa aku buat pasport sempat aku terserempak dengan Sibo dan adiknya dari kugiran Dead Eyes Glow yang meningkat naik sekarang ni. Marang hardcore, ooppss sekarang dah jadi East Coast Hardcore?? Mereka buat pasport berkumpulan nak pegi Indonesia ada show kat sana. Dah maju sekarang masing-masing dah main luar negara. Bagus. Tak pernah aku bayangkan suatu masa dahulu band-band kawan-kawan dapat merasa pergi oversea semata-mata untuk main gig.

So, semalam pun jumpa Fazri DRSA (dengan isteri dan anak), Izhan Sleepyjeremy (dengan isteri), Syukree Chaos PS dekat kenduri kahwin Sedang sang penyanyi Sleepyjeremy dengan gadis pilihan sendiri. Tahniah la pada beliau dan 'orang rumah dan jalan-jalan' beliau. :)

Dah jumpa Izhan tu, dia ajakla buat aktiviti 'scene' sikit, apa lagi...gi jamming. Malam tu ramai jugak lah. Shabri Kasih Sayang, Izhan, Awang Dully Dog, Muih Inikah Hidup, seluruh line-up kugiran The Obvious, Rizie dan Taki dari Clumsy Ruby dan lain-lain la. Feisal Geronimo pun ade lepak minum.

Sebelum masuk studio rupanya Carin yang jamming dengan kugirannya, Distortia. Sempat jugak jumpe mata ngan dia walaupun tak sempat lepak sembang minum tanya perkembangan distro dia dan lain-lain aktiviti. Tahun ni SPM kang? hahaha. Studio satu lagi sebelum Rizie masuk, rupanya dua org cousins aku yang jamming. Sempat aku bagi free copy Dum Dum Tak dan Mosh kat diorang. Kan dah kate, penjahanam generasi masa depan hahahha! Aku pun baru tahu yang cousin-cousin aku ni (muda lagi baru abis SPM) ada terjebak dengan gejala sihat ni, main muzik punk rock.

Hahaha...biase la jamming galok-galok ni lagu-lagu pun ngarut jer. Sebab Awang main gitar, banyak lagu Ramones yang dibantai main. Terselit juga sebuah lagu yang agak hits jugak dari kugiran Inikah Hidup hahahahhaha...iaitu lagu 'tunduk'...(3 yang jamming tu line-up Inikah Hidup)

Memang tak cukup senarai manusia-manusia yang aku wajib jumpa tiap kali balik kampung dalam perenggan atas tadi tu. Tapi apakan daya musim tengkujuh macam ni, memang sedap tidur berdengkur kat rumah berbanding lepak ngn member-member. Apatah lagi aku ni memang pemalas dan suka tido. Haha.

Sedikit Iklan: DRSA zine kelolaan Cikgu Fazri isu ke 9 dah release pada bulan ni. Aku pun baru dapat semalam. Ada wawancara dengan Hishamuddin Rais (yang dibuat oleh Shabri dan aku) serta Ayie Bullat (sapa dia manusia ni?? ketahui sendiri dalam zine ni), ada kolum dari Fazri sendiri, aku, Mat Inikah Hidup, Din Akar, Rule Holiday In The Rain zine dan lain-lain. Aku ada beberapa copy tapi sangat terhad. Bole try tanya aku atau email ke drsa@rocketmail.com

(i'm one of the audio reviewer for this 'MRR-like' zine)

hopefully we’re entering the ‘ricecooker zine era’, an era that will give a big impact to the local scene (and beyond). like how the ‘blasting concept era’ gave a very big impact and changed many kids’ lifes 13 years ago. hopefully it’s open-minded (in music genres) like BC too. it’s hard to turn the clock back and make the scene happening like how ‘The Bollocks ‘revoultion’ ep gave a big impact towards the local scene 10 years ago until got pirated versions of it for rm9.90 to rm15 while the original version is only RM3.

probably i’ve been thinking too much about ‘impact to the scene’ lately while those glorious days are long gone and will never come back

Skatanix 'Skatepunk' cd ep

Out Now! Skatanix new ep. I did an interview with them in issue #5 of Mosh zine (August 2000). That time, they just released their demo cassette. In this new ep, there are old songs from their 'Damage 23' full length CD rerecorded. Better soundings, better musicianship and everything's better.
